Why Vegetarianism?

Vegetarianism and the use of wholesome, natural foods is becoming an increasingly popular lifestyle choice. But why become a vegetarian? Here are several reasons for being a vegetarian:
  • Feel better. Most people feel better when they exclude all meat and dairy products from their diet and eat healthfully. Some people may experience a sense of weakness or lack of vigor when they first become a vegetarian (if they cut out all meat at once), This is not because meat it essential, but because meat is stimulating and excites the nerves

  • Healthy. Vegetarians get first hand nutrition. Nutrition from animals is second or third hand. Many hormones and antibiotics are given to animals that we don't need! We need as natural and as calming a diet as possible in this fast age.

  • Less chance of disease and sickness. As disease in humans is increasing, so is disease in the animal realm. Inspection of meat is not adequate. You do not know what state of health the animal was in when it was killed and you often don't know what was fed to the animal that could affect you through its eggs, milk, or meat. There is also an increasing amount of pollution in water that affect the health of fish. Why risk additional possibilities of disease from animals when we have enough problems with sickness passed between humans?

  • Less fat and cholesterol. Meat, eggs, and dairy products are the major source of fat and cholesterol in our diets.

  • Economical. In many places, meat and animal products are more expensive than grains, fruits, legumes, and vegetables.

  • Kinder to animals. Killing animals does not necessarily follow the principle of kindness with which we should treat other creatures.

  • Wise use of resources. It takes less land and space to provide food for a vegetarian than for a nonvegetarian.

  • High fiber. Fiber is found to be exclusively of plant origin. Fiber helps to control blood sugar levels by slowing down glucose absorption, helps lower cholesterol, and helps prevent colon cancer, diverticulosis, polyps, hemorrhoids, constipation, and other diseases.

  • High in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are found almost exclusively in foods that are of vegetable origin. They are most nutritious and healthful when eaten in as natural and unrefined a form as possible.

  • Fun and creative. Cooking vegetarian food can be fun and lends itself to as much creativity as you want. It may not be enticing to those that haven't been able to taste some delicious vegetarian dishes or know how to cook vegetarian style, but give it some effort, enthusiasm, experimenting, and smiles and you'll have a fun time.

I hope this web site and the recipes in it help you to appreciate and enjoy vegetarianism.
